Buthidaung, Arakan State: The police looted goods from a trader when he was carrying it from Buthidaung to his village Dar Bi! ne Sara in Buthidaung Township in a boat on October 1. The police alleged that he did not have permission to sell goods in the village, said a friend of the trader.

The trader Abdu Salam (23), son of Azarus Zaman, hails from Dar Bine Sara village in Buthidaung Township under the Arakan State, Burma. He has a shop in his village.

On October 1, he went to Buthidaung town to stock up on goods for his shop and was! returning to his village in a boat in the evening along with other passengers.

When the boat reached Sabe Bazaar village near the Mayu River, police personnel on patrol from the Sabe Bazaar out post called out to the boatman to berth at the bank of the river. Policemen climbed into the boat, and began searching for goods being carried by passengers and seized 50 kilograms of chickpea from said Abdu Salam. He had bought it for his shop to sell to the villagers and some for his own use during the month of Ramadan, said one of the passengers.

The police took away 50 kilograms of chickpea to their camp from the boat. The owner of the chickpea went to the camp and asked the police officer to return it, but he said that he had is no permission to sell goods in the village.

"There has been no indication that goods cannot be sold in the village. It is deliberate harassment of the Rohingya community. There is no one to stop such crimes against the Rohingyas. They are above the law," a village elder said ##
